FACILITIES

  AIR FLOW LAB

FCRI has established air flow facilities covering areas related to industrial gases. A full-fledged low pressure calibration facility has been in existence since 1989 operating at near atmospheric pressure with flow rates upto 10000 m3/h. Various types of flow meters of sizes upto 400 mm are evaluated with measurement uncertainties, which are in par with international institutions.

Air Flow Lab

Primary Air Flow Laboratory (PAFL)

Calibration of flowmeters at low pressure is carried out in Primary Air Flow Laboratory (PAFL) for flow ranges upto 40m3/h. As per the norms stipulated by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) for standard atmospheres for conditioning, ambient is maintained at a temperature of 20 +/- 0.5oC and at relative humidity of 55 +/- 5% through an air conditioning system operated continuously. The conditioned atmosphere of PAFL maintains the metrological qualities of the master flow meters and thereby provides high reliability of calibration and operating performance.

Secondary Air Flow Laboratory (SAFL)

Secondary Air Flow Laboratory has reference flow meters upto a range of 10,000 m3/h. Sixteen numbers of critical flow venturi nozzles having capacities in the range 0.7 m3/h - 2880m3/h, designed as per ISO 9300 serve as reference standards

Round robin test programme for Intercomparison Tests in the Air Flow Laboratory

In addition to the static traceability of measurements to the National Standards, the dynamic traceability of the flow measurement facilities at International level is established through intercomparison test programme periodically. Two such programmes have been completed by FCRI. An International Intercomparison experimental programme was carried out during 1992 using a 200mm twin orifice plate intercomparison transfer standard. The package was subjected to detailed tests at FCRI flow facilities and also at three major internationally recognized laboratories in Europe namely National Engineering Laboratory, UK; Delft Hydraulics Laboratory, The Netherlands and Danish Technological Institute, Denmark. The intercomparison results have shown that the FCRI facilities are in par with other International flow calibration facilities. The results were consistent with the claimed uncertainty levels of flow measurement. Again during 2001-2002, the package was re-tested at Delft Hydraulics Laboratory, The Netherlands Measurement Institute, The Netherlands; National Engineering Laboratory, UK. Recently the above orifice package was re-calibrated at SAFL to complete the round-robin test programme.

High Pressure Flow Facilities
20 Bar Blow Down Air Test Facility

Compressed air is stored in four Vessels 11 m3 capacity at a pressure of 20 bar(g). During tests air is discharged (blow down mode) through reference meters and products to be calibrated/tested. This facility is mostly used for testing of Safety relief v alves and flowmeters upto 2" nominal diameters.

Primary Standard Gravimetric System (PSGS)

PSGS enables primary calibration of 50 mm turbine meters for air flowrates upto 50m3/h at pressure upto 20 bar(g). The measurement uncertainty is about 0.12%. Using this system, the traceability of calibration of reference turbine meters in CLATF is established

Site Calibration of Mass flowmeters of CNG Dispensers

FCRI presently carrying out an assignment for M/s. Indraprastha Gas Ltd. for site calibration of mass flowmeters of CNG dispensers at various sites around New Delhi.

ACCREDITATIONS & RECOGNITIONS

.NMI Certificate for compliance of Closed Loop Air Test Facility to ISO/IEC 17025 1999

Officials from NMI audited the Closed Loop Air Test for compliance as per ISO 17025 criteria. NMI have certified that the Quality System, Calibration and Flow Measurements carried out at Closed Loop Air Test Facility (CLATF 20 Bar, 400 m3/h) of FCRI complies with the criteria for calibration laboratories according to ISO / IEC 17025. FCRI has received declaration of statement on assessment of quality system according to ISO / IEC 17025 - 1999.

.Type Approval of Domestic Diaphragm Gas Meters according to BS 4161 : Part 5, 1990 and EN 1359 : 1998

A wide range of domestic gas meters were calibrated for various companies. Samples of diaphragm gas meters used for domestic gas metering were subjected to Type Approval tests in accordance with BS 4161 Part 5, 1990 "Gas meters, specification for diaphragm meters for working pressure up to 7 bar" and BS EN 1359 : 1999, "Gas meters - Diaphragm gas meters"
