The Water Flow
Laboratory has specialized test rigs for the precise calibration
of flowmeters, testing of valves, pipe fittings and other flow
products. The whole system is designed to handle a maximum flowrate
of 5000m3/h. Pipeline size upto 900mm. The gravimetric static
weighing method as per ISO 4185 is adopted here for the measurement
of flow rate. The two weighing tanks are of capacities 2T &
20T. Diverter systems are used to collect water in the weighing
tank, for an accurately measured period of time. The mass measurement
is by load cells. The relative density together with measurements
of water temperature at the moment of each diversion enables the
mass readings after correction for air buoyancy, to be converted
into volume. These volumes are divided by the respective diversion
times to obtain accurate measurement of flow rate.

Testing of Water meters:
Water industrial segment and utilities like Metro city water supply
schemes, state level Water Board Authorities embarking on modernization
have initiated renovation measures for existing water distribution
systems.
FCRI is identified as testing agency for performance evaluation
of water meters. A test rig is erected exclusively for ascertaining
the quality of water meters by subjecting them to Pressure Tests,
Accuracy tests and Endurance Tests (continuous flow for 100 hrs
and one Lac interruptions). FCRI is actively involved in testing
of water meters for various Water Board Authorities / Local Municipalities
/ Corporation Office for Bulk purchase of water meters. In typical
cases, FCRI is involved from the stage of preparation of tendering
specifications to evaluation of competent suppliers of large flow
measurement needs (80mm - 700mm).

New sophisticated Water Flow Facility (100 mm)
Considering the requirement of a high accuracy (± 0.1%) set-up
for calibrating new generation flow meters and the heavy demand
in the existing Water Flow Laboratory, especially for sizes upto
100 mm, an advanced high accuracy water flow laboratory to accommodate
meter sizes upto 100 mm and a flow rate of 300 m3/hr has been set
up. It was commissioned in the month of October'05.
