“Maintenance of traceability of reference standards for basic parameters related to fluid flow, to National Measurement System and Maintenance of Quality system as per relevant international standards (such as ISO/IEC 17025-2005)” is one of the main part of QUALITY POLICY OF FCRI. In order to accomplish this, PHYSICAL STANDARDS LABORATORY was established in 1989 along with the flow measurement facilities. After a lot of improvements and enhancement during the successive years, the laboratory has become one of the state of the art calibration and testing laboratory at par with other laboratories in the world. And every year, hundreds of Indian companies (both large scale and small scale, public and private sector) and Laboratories are seeking services of this laboratory for calibration of their measuring instruments with “TRACEABILITY” for their ISO 9000/QS 9000/ISO 14000/IS/NABL quality certification requirements. This laboratory is one of the first NABL accredited laboratory in the country in Mechanical measurement category and today, the only single laboratory covering a very wide range of parameters in the area of Mechanical Calibration covering – Length, Angle, Surface Roughness, Mass, Low / Medium and High Pressure (Pneumatic and Hydraulic), Vacuum, Barometric Pressure , Density, Volume, Viscosity, etc. Traceable calibration can also be done for certain ranges of parameters like Force, Shore Hardness and Torque also. The laboratory has participated in various Proficiency Testing programmes, organized by NPL/NABL/APLAC at National or International level. The Laboratory is equipped with the most reliable and sophisticated state-of-the art calibration equipment and is manned by trained and experienced personnel, operated under controlled environmental conditions of temperature 20±1.0 °C, Humidity 50±10% Rh, Dust level 1,00,000 class. All master instruments are regularly calibrated at NPL, New Delhi /International laboratories to maintain traceability. Calibration activities are carried out with established procedures in conformance with BIS/OIML/ISO/ANSI/ASTM/BS specifications. Following Instruments can be tested / calibrated at the Physical Standards Laboratory Length/ Dimension metrology • Slip gauges • Thread ring gauge Viscosity • Rotational Viscometers (BROOKFIELD or other type ) Mass • Moisture balance Volume • Pipettes (single mark & graduated) Density • Density Hydrometer Pressure –Absolute, Gauge,Differential – Air/ Liquid medium • Pressure gauges (air & oil/ absolute, compound or gauge pressures) Force & Hardness • Proving rings Other services of the Laboratory

As a part of the validation programme as per American Gas Association standards, it is required to calibrate (i) field transmitters -Pressure, Differential pressure and Temperature (ii) Verify the geometry and dimensions of orifice metering lines and its associated piping. Among the many such assignments completed include the Natural Gas metering stations of M/s.ONGC, M/s.Cairn Energy, M/s.Madras Fertilizers Ltd, M/s.SPIC , M/s.GAIL India, at various locations spread all over India.
